What to Do If Someone Gets Too High on Cannabis

Getting too high can feel scary or uncomfortable, but in most cases the effects are temporary and will wear off with time.

1. Stay calm — the effects will pass

Cannabis effects usually peak within 30 minutes to 2 hours (longer with edibles) and gradually fade. Anxiety and panic make the experience feel worse.

2. Do not take more

Taking more cannabis while already uncomfortable almost always makes symptoms worse.

3. Sit or lie down in a safe place

Avoid risky activities like:

  • Driving
  • Climbing stairs
  • Using machinery

Coordination and judgment are impaired.

4. Drink water and stay hydrated

Small sips of water can help with dry mouth and discomfort. Avoid alcohol—it can worsen the effects.

5. Eat a light snack if possible

Some people feel better after eating simple foods like bread, crackers, or fruit.

6. Stay with someone you trust

Being around a calm person helps reduce panic and keeps the situation safe.

7. Be extra careful with edibles

Edibles are riskier because:

  • Effects start slowly (30 minutes to 2+ hours)
  • The high can become intense later
  • People often take more too soon

Waiting before taking more is critical.

8. Know when to get medical help

Seek help if there are serious symptoms such as:

  • Chest pain
  • Trouble breathing
  • Severe confusion
  • Uncontrollable vomiting
  • Fainting
  • Seizures

These are uncommon but should not be ignored.
